Deception Pass and Fidalgo Island

Join hike leader Bart Pestarino for two day hikes starting at 9:30am each day -- choose to do one or both. Please note there are distance options and difficulty level options.


Friday June 10th: Hoypus Hill/Hoypus Point Natural Area Trails in Deception Pass State Park (North Whidbey Island across the Deception Pass Bridge)
Picturesque seashore and the old-growth forest is one of the largest remaining in Puget Sound lowlands. Loop hike with highest point of 400 feet and total 600 feet elevation change. Additional distance options via Goose Rock and Cranberry Lake areas. Hike begins from parking lot at end of Cornet Bay Road (there is parking on both sides of the restrooms and a large parking lot to the right at the dead end). Saturday June 11th: Whistle Lake around Mt. Erie on Fidalgo Island in Anacortes forestlands. Loop hike begins from parking lot at Heart Lake (elevation 338 ft.), proceeds around Whistle Lake, then around the base of Mt. Erie.  Additional distance options and difficulty options via Mt. Erie (elevation 1,273 ft.) climb and Sugarloaf (elevation 1,044 ft.) climb on the return. The summit of Mt. Erie is also accessible via paved road with parking lot at top. The south slope of Mount Erie is a popular destination for climbing and rappelling. Heart Lake is a local recreation lake for kayaking, paddle boarding, picnicking and those who may wish to take a cool dip after a hike.
